Frequently Asked Questions
Why now?
It’s time, and the goal is within reach. God has blessed us beyond measure, and we are well positioned to take this step. Not only do we have the capacity, but we also have vision for reinvesting the monthly savings we will obtain by eliminating debt.
Should I redirect my current giving to The Generations Project?
No. Current and regular giving builds the base for us to do ministry and invest in local and global missions. We do not want to negatively affect the day-to-day impact of our ministries.
How much will we save in the budget?
Our current payments are $19,000/month. Eliminating the debt frees up these resources for ministry.
What will we do with our savings?
A portion of the savings will create a next-generation pastoral internship/residency program that would not only strengthen our next-generation ministries but also impact future leadership in the big ʹCʹ Church. We would also invest a portion of those savings toward our local and global mission strategies.
If I make a commitment, would I be able to change the amount if needed/wanted?
Absolutely! Unforeseen circumstances may cause you to want to increase or decrease your commitment in the future. At any time, you can review or change your commitment. Simply contact us or submit another commitment card as an adjustment.
What if I can't afford to give?
God wants our hearts above all. In Mark 12, the widow who gave a single coin did not make a huge financial contribution, but Jesus stated that it was the largest gift of all! This project is about us coming together, giving sacrificially, and trusting God’s provision and blessing. Our sacrifices may seem small and insignificant, but when combined, the result is abundantly more than we could have imagined.
Why 14 months?
Financial circumstances or events might impact giving within a certain calendar year. Spanning over two calendar years opens the door to giving in two different calendar years, should there be challenges or benefits to giving in one year over another.
Let’s write a better story for the future.
”McDowell is a community following Jesus—and as we follow Jesus, we learn to love humbly and sacrificially.
That’s not just our statement of identity—it’s a guide and pathway for us. The beauty of that statement is that it emerged after years of watching God shape us as a church.
In 2008, Robin and I were pastoring in Oklahoma, and we were surprised by multiple conversations with friends and mentors about a church called McDowell in Scottsdale, Arizona. We weren’t looking to make a move, and to be honest, we were more interested in remaining in Oklahoma or moving toward our families on the other side of the country. But with each conversation came more conviction and confirmation. Sacrifice rarely matches our best-laid human plans.
We took a step of faith, and what an amazing journey it’s been! God has done abundantly more than we asked or imagined. Those first few months were difficult. At times, they were painful. But it was evident that God was creating something special in and among these people. We watched families and individuals sacrifice for the good of the church in ways that were unexpected and beautifully generous. Those sacrifices have paid huge dividends for others who have come to Christ and made McDowell their home over the last 30 years.
The Generations Project is about making investments today that will pay huge dividends for the next generations.
If we sacrifice to pay off our debt, it will free us and future generations to dream new dreams of what God can do.
What would happen if each of us made a financial sacrifice now? Could it begin a ripple of ministry and mission that will change the future? Imagine the legacy we would leave as we step out from under the weight of debt. That’s THE GENERATIONS PROJECT.
When I arrived as the pastor back in 2008, our debt was $4.2 million. We’ve added well over $3 million worth of buildings and campus additions. We’ve also helped seed two church plants that are thriving, and another that is just now taking root. Today, our debt is under $1 million. Now is the time, and we are the ones who will finish this chapter—and begin writing the next.
“McDowell, let’s do this together—each of us sacrificing to write a better story for the future. The best is yet to come!”
